Madrid Spain 2019
On June 22, 2019, Dr. Michelle Boone-Thornton presented her paper An Interdisciplinary Approach to Entrepreneurship: A Theoretical Model for Starting a Non-Profit at the International Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Management IASEM- International Conference Social Science and Humanities that was held in Madrid, Spain June 22-23, 2019. Eight papers were published in the proceedings with authors from India, China, Nigeria, Indonesia, United States (Dr. Boone-Thornton) and Japan.
Dr. Boone-Thornton was invited to participate in a service learning course as a Visiting Professor that was held from June 24 – 27 at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid. Dr. Boone-Thornton along with ten other professors from universities throughout Madrid discussed the integration of community services learning projects into law, engineering, and nursing curriculums and coursework. Dr. Boone Thornton utilizes many components of the community service model in the Human Services curriculum at Saint Leo University where she teaches and was able to help professors in Madrid develop a blueprint for using the model in their curriculums during a group assignment which focused on: “Taking Law out of the Books”. This hands-on perspective merged the community service learning model with an introductory Constitutional law course to help students solve real community problems for citizens who are exploited and not aware of the rights and protection they have as it relates to housing. Implementing this model will help student learn about and work closely with non-profit agencies and identify community resources and other avenues where they can apply innovative and creativity solutions. It provides an opportunity for students to integrate academia with hands on experiences under the supervision of university professors, and experts and practitioners in their prospective fields. It’s a reciprocal process of learning, giving, helping, growing, and developing that benefits everyone involved.
